Thembi Hlalele of North West for Miss Eagle South Africa 2018

Nomathemba Hlalele better known as Thembi Hlalele, 23, from  North West Province, South Africa is a high calibre contender in Miss Eagle South Africa 2018.

She was born in Mahikeng, North West. At the age of 3, she and her family relocated to Pretoria, Gauteng where she completed her grades R throughout Grade 5. In 2007, Thembi, again relocated to a small town called Postmansburg, Northern Cape, where she completed her grade 7 up to grade 10. She finished her grade 11 and 12 at the Glen High School which is in Pretoria East, when she relocated back to Pretoria in 2012. And now, as she recounts, "Now I find myself back in the North West Province once again. My hometown."

Her love for modeling came at a very young age, her mother used to take her and younger sibling to modeling classes just as one of those side hobbies. Unlike her sister, she continued this love when she started entering local pageants. She won her first pageant in 2010 when she was crowned as Miss Postmansburg High School. After that she then moved on to enter Miss JR South Africa, which is under pageants SA (South Africa) where she also placed as a finalist. This young lady, also entered Miss Glen High school where she placed in the Top 10 Semifinalists.

Thembi, recounts as a female activist, in which she entered Miss Phenomenal Gauteng in 2016, which is a pageant aimed at addressing and combating female and children abuse. She placed 4th, as well as Miss Personality. She then moved back to Mafikeng, North West, where she's continuing her love for pageantry. She is now busy with the prestigious pageant called Miss Eagle South Africa.

Miss Eagle South Africa is a women empowerment contest using the "Beauty with Brains and Purpose" platform to empower young women to grow and develop themselves by making a positive impact in their communities. She shares us her endeavor in the contest: "I've worked my way up to the Finalist stage representing the North West province. I'm also a brand ambassador for Motofind.co.za which is a platform where you can purchase and list your vehicle. I'm grateful for this opportunity and very proud of myself. Amongst that I'm also busy writing a book called "AfricanKhaleesi: #QueeningForEveryBlackGirl". The book is about female empowerment and will be giving young girls tips on how to embrace the Queen in them because I believe self confidence and awareness is the first step to greatness."

She is also a volunteer on some Sundays as a Sunday school teacher at her local church where her love for children can be seen. She's also been involved in some charity events like taking to the streets of Mahikeng and feeding those who don't have enough food. Giving away blankets during the winter and playing with children because interacting with the kids keeps her enjoyment in a different level. Thembi also go around local schools to do motivational talks. In her free time she really enjoy playing Netball and she's been doing so for the past 15 years.

When asked about her dreams:
"Small or petite girls are usually disadvantaged when it comes to the pageant world. As a petite girl, my dream is to encourage inclusiveness in the pageant industry. Winning Miss Eagle South Africa would be the perfect place to start. I wish to see black girls embracing who they are fully and stop trying to change themselves to fit into the western criteria of beauty. I want to see a nation where girls stop dragging each other down, instead I want to see them use that energy to lift each other up and help each other become great. I have a strong passion for justice and would love to work with the United Nations one day. I have started a brand called African Khaleesi. It's a clothing and cosmetic line, which I will be expanding in the near future. People should keep a lookout for that."

Her outlook in the contest:
"This pageant has changed me and positively so because it has empowered me and has allowed me to make a difference in the community I live in. I really hope to win this pageant so I can get a chance to make a difference and touch lives on a broader scale. If I do indeed win, I'll model on a daily basis that although different, every girl is a Queen in her own right and should always embrace that. I'll teach young black girls tolerance and acceptance among each other, staying true to the spirit of Ubuntu."

Lastly, what is your most striking description?
One word that describes me is Fearless! I live by the motto "Never underestimate the power of a female who knows what she wants".
